Honest Burger: Gluten Free Burgers in London

October 28, 2013

In my almost three years of being a coeliac, I haven't been able to enjoy a chicken burger at any restaurant! However, that changed… I saw a photo my coeliac friend put up on Instagram and I instantly asked her "Woah! Was that for you?!" she told me it was placed called Honest Burger. I told my husband we just have to go!

Soooo.. one Friday night we ventured out to the Soho location, we got there and they said it was a 2.5-3 hour long wait! Shows how busy they are. My husband insisted we just head over the Camden location since he really wanted me to try it… So we made our way to the Camden market location and after trekking around for two hours to get food it really was the yummiest thing I had in a long time. As soon as I took my first bite, I had the biggest grin on my face. He said the two hour trek to eat was worth it all :)  the bun didn't even taste gluten free and the freshly made chips were to die for. The one downside is, since its in Camden market it is quite small, but we waited a bit longer to be sat inside since it was pretty cold!

I'm sure the photo says its all!

Udi's Gluten Free in the U.K.

October 07, 2013

OH YES!!! It is true... Udi's gluten free has hit the U.K. shopping shelves!!!! When I saw it today, I almost had tears of joy... I know it's silly, but I love bagels and gluten free bagels is not something you can't find easily here in London... I found this at my local tube station Tesco, I wonder if they are bringing more products. Their cookies, muffins and everything is so delicious!

At the Allergy Show here in London when I saw the Udi's stall I almost fainted. They said they'd be making their debut in London sometime in September... and I can't believe it's actually here!!! I actually came home, ate dinner and had to write this post. Welcome Udi's :-)

Gluten Free in Frankfurt

September 21, 2013

Just last week, I visited Germany for the first time. I went to Frankfurt for work... very cute little city indeed and quite cheap!

I was in luck, a colleague of mine at the Frankfurt office has a friend at work that actually has coeliac disease. So he actually understood what it was and he spoke German! He was great help on the trip... translating menus, talking to waiters and suggesting places for me to eat.

The first night was a late work night and conveniently a few floors beneath our office was a MoschMosch. I said to my colleague I usually can't eat at Chinese/Japanese places because of soya sauce. He ensured me they have a gluten free menu and I should be fine. And yes I was!!! I was in Frankfurt for two nights and I actually ate there both nights, since the first night I did not feel sick. It was just rice noodles in red thai curry sauce. It was nice with lots of chicken and vegetables. I know its a chain, but at least you won't go hungry. They had a little gluten free section as well as an English menu to understand the German.

I had a very late flight the night I was headed back to London and boy was I hungry. All I wanted to do was eat a meal and not a bag of potato chips. I made my way to several restaurants and I came across Kuffler & Bucher and the manager knew what gluten was. He showed me a few things and I decided to side with the roasted tomato risotto. I was hungry so I ate a bit, but that stuff can be quite heavy so most of it was left waisted. It was delicious, however I did have a tummy ache and got quite bloated after. I knew when I picked the risotto, the broth they used must have had gluten! But they had other meat dishes that would definitely be gluten free.

Not a long stay for me in Frankfurt, but it seems they understand what being gluten free is. My colleague also said there are many other places including little restaurant shops! And for you Americans out there, at the new skyline plaza they also opened a Chipotle. You can never go wrong with a rice bowl :)  If you've been let me know about your experience!

Gluten Free in New York City

September 18, 2013

I always say this to my family and friends... when I go to the USA, I feel normal. I still ask for a gluten free menu, but restaurants and staff actually know what gluten is. As oppose to other parts of the world,  I usually need to explain. It feels so great to go to the USA and have such a variety... and well, feel normal.

I recently just went on a business trip to NYC and man was I in gluten free heaven! They have so many restaurants that cater to a coeliac. Here is my experience at a few. (From the photos below, you'll know I really love Italian :) )

GF Breadsticks @ Risotteria
First night my friends and I hit up Risotteria. Delicious Italian food, everything from gluten free pasta, pizza, meatballs and more! The two items on the menu that caught my eye were 1) the gluten free fresh breadsticks. They were so delicious and freshly baked, so nice and warm. The best thing about the breadsticks -- they are free! You can ask for as many refills as you want. I had breadsticks after years and this definitely filled that breadstick void. 2) they even had homemade apple pie. I can't review that because I did not try it (I think I over did it on the breadsticks) It's a very small place, but very cute. The staff is great as well.

I love macaroni and cheese. While googling places to eat, a few of my work friends and I found this gem -- S'mac. I've never in my life been to a place just dedicated to macaroni and cheese! and the best part is they do all their macaroni and cheese dishes gluten free which GF bread crumbs sprinkling. I had the buffalo chicken GF macaroni and cheese and it was great. However, the meal is extremely heavy. I got the normal size and I hardly made a dent in it. It's quite heavy, so you can only have so much no matter how much your taste buds are loving it.  So if you don't have much of an appetite, get the smallest size possible... trust me even that will be hard to finish!

Another night we hit up Pala Pizza.  Another great Italian restaurant that had items I've never had as a coeliac before. They had delicious bread parmesan chips with a side of marinara, which were great. And something I would fly back to NYC for were the spinach and mozzarella risotta ball. Not often do you get this sort of fancy stuff on a GF menu. Trust me, the photo looks amazing, but it tasted even better.

I fear to say it again, I went to another Italian restaurant. I love Italian food as you can tell, but this was something I don't get in London... that is gluten free ravioli at Bistango, is wonderful! The fresh bread   is to die for you. The worst feeling--going to a restaurant and not getting bread while everyone else stuffs their face with it. But have no fear, Bistango gives a great portion of fresh + warm gluten free bread with a side of garlic oil. My friends and I shared a pizza bread as an appetizer which was great. The ravioli was so fantastic and to top the delicious evening off, we all shared a piece of gluten free cheesecake. A very classy restaurant, and a must visit for a coeliac when you visit NYC.

Since I've been a coeliac, I've never been out anywhere for breakfast. Mainly because I'm not crazy about eggs and you don't really get GF pancakes at places in London. But have no fear, I got a fantastic gluten free brunch at Bloom's Deli in NYC. We ordered the gluten free french toast, which was pretty good. Like I said I'm not mad about eggs and you could taste the egginess in the bread, so wasn't too mad about that. Also had a taste of the gluten free pancakes with chocolate chips and bananas! Delicious! The deli is decorated as you would imagine a perfect like breakfast cafe in NYC.

This is just a few of my yummy highlights in NYC. It was a crazy work week, but the evenings were wonderful in the city. My heart can't explain how nice it was to feel normal and enjoy restaurants normal people do... I'm sure all you other coeliacs understand.

Venice Bakery Gluten Free Pizza Bases

August 05, 2013

I'm so happy the U.K. Has a wide range and variety of gluten free pizzas and pizza bases. You have the big chains like Pizza Hut, Dominos and then the supermarkets that all have their own fresh bases and frozen pizzas and then all the  other smaller companies as well. Lots of variety to choose from = happy coeliacs.

At the London Allergy Show in June, I came across the Venice Bakery stall. It was one busy stand and what caught my eye was the seasoned pizza bases. I tried it and instantly fell in love. It was so thin, light and just the base alone was so tasty. I bought two and was extremely satisfied with them. I plan on ordering more very soon!

If you have yet to try the bases, check it out. I highly recommend them.

Sorry, I've been MIA

Sorry, sorry, sorry! I know I've been slacking on the blogging. Life has been busy with work and social events and the other reason ... food has just been annoying! I've been strictly gluten free, but have a severe tummy ache nearly everyday! It's sad that I've just learned to live with the tummy pains. I recently had tests done, so hoping to figure out what exactly is wrong... hoping its not another intolerance, don't think I can give up much else. Le Sigh.

Hidden Gluten Free Gem, Almondy Toblerone Tarta

January 02, 2013

I recently went to a family dinner and we all started talking about gluten free products and foods. My cousins has said they had tried this delicious Toblerone cake and when looking at the box realized it was gluten free. They said it was oh so good and couldn't believe it was gluten free. Once they mentioned it, I was on a hunt for this Almondy Toblerone cake. I managed to find it in a big Tescos.

I didn't defrost the whole cake. Just cut a slice and let it sit out for 20-30 minutes. It was so delicious! You would never know that it was gluten free. Especially, since it has delicious crunchy bites… don't be fooled though, those are almond bites, nothing containing gluten :) Phew!

This really and truly is a hidden gem. I don't think I would have ever known about it if my family members didn't point it at out. It really should be in the gluten free frozen section of supermarkets. Not sure why it isn't!
